.Badri Narayan, born in July 1929 in Secunderabad, Andhra Pradesh, is a self-taught artist with over 45 years of creative practice. Known for his introspective and autobiographical approach, Narayan’s work reflects deep self-reflection. Initially working with tiles and mosaics, he later adopted watercolor, pastel, and etching techniques, drawing inspiration from Indian miniature traditions, medieval woodcuts, Byzantine portraiture, and Ajanta murals. His small-scale, detailed figurative scenes often incorporate symbolism and references to Indian mythology and literature. In addition to his visual art, Narayan has illustrated children’s books, written poetry and short stories, and exhibited both in India and internationally. He received the Padma Shri award in 1987 for his contributions to the arts, and his works are housed in the National Gallery of Modern Art and National Museum in New Delhi.
