Maqbool Fida Husain (1915–2011) was a pivotal figure in Indian art and a founding member of the Bombay Progressive Artists’ Group. With a career spanning over six decades, he became synonymous with modern Indian art, both nationally and internationally. Husain’s rise to fame was not only due to his distinctive style but also his choice of subjects, which included iconic figures like Mother Teresa and characters from epics such as the Mahabharata. His work sought to capture the essence of these subjects, reflecting his deep connection to Indian culture.
Husain was honored with India’s prestigious Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan awards. Known as the “common man’s artist,” his larger-than-life persona, eccentricities, and approachability endeared him to both art enthusiasts and the general public. He passed away in London in 2011.
