Murali Nagapuzha

Murali Nagapuzha is a self-taught artist with a keen eye for creating vibrant landscapes rich in foliage, animals, birds, and human figures. Over the past fifty years, he has developed a unique approach, using layered colors to create depth and life in his work, rather than flat color applications. This three-dimensional treatment brings his subjects, inspired by the colorful landscapes of Kerala, to life. His paintings feature birds like hornbills, magpies, and sunbirds, peacocks, tropical forests, fishermen’s stalls, and even insects, all rendered with intricate brushstrokes that evoke a rich, symphonic range of color. Nagapuzha’s meticulous technique invites viewers to experience a deeper connection to Kerala’s lush, complex landscape. His artistic vision is shaped by his communist ideals and his father’s legacy as a bell metal worker, which influenced his dedication to craftsmanship and authenticity. His work honors both his father’s memory and political commitment, giving it a unique, personal depth. This authenticity has earned Nagapuzha recognition from fellow artists and poets like ONV Kurup, who incorporates his vibrant imagery into poetry. His art also embellishes works by authors like T. Padmanabhan, N.S. Madhavan, and Anita Nayar, and has raised funds for organizations like CRY. Far from being a distraction, his art has gained respect for its ideological and cultural significance, continuously drawing people from diverse walks of life to the rich tradition of Kerala’s authentic artistic expression.
