Dhiraj Choudhury

Dhiraj Choudhury (1936–2018) was an iconic modern Indian painter and art teacher, born in Brahmanbaria District, Bengal (now in Bangladesh). He was deeply committed to inspiring his students to develop a social conscience in their art. Choudhury’s restless, provocative lines defied tradition and broke iconographic norms, often leaving a lasting impression on viewers. His work was not about passive contemplation but about challenging the viewer’s perceptions, offering a soul-shaking, nerve-rattling experience. Choudhury served as a Professor of Art at Delhi College of Art, shaping the careers of many prominent artists. He held over 75 solo exhibitions worldwide, including in India, France, Switzerland, England, the USA, and Singapore. His notable works include Saga of India’s Freedom Struggle and Pain, Women and Clown (1995) at Birla Academy, Kolkata. His art is part of prestigious collections such as the National Gallery of Modern Art, Rashtrapati Bhavan, and various embassies, as well as numerous private collections. With over 15 major awards, Choudhury remains a revered figure in the world of Indian contemporary art.
