Vijay Shinde, primarily known as an abstract artist, began his artistic journey with portraiture and figurative work before gradually transitioning to abstraction over the course of two decades. His shift was driven by a fascination with the mysticism of abstract art, the subtle expressions it offers, and the unique relationship it fosters between the artist and the canvas.
Born in Sholapur, Maharashtra, in 1958, Shinde developed an early passion for painting. He formally pursued art at Abhinav College of Art in Pune, later completing his Fine Arts degree at Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai, in 1982.
Shinde’s approach to art is spontaneous and without preconceived notions. His work is fueled by a deep search for eternal truth, exploring the invisible yet omnipresent divine force that guides us. Themes of cosmic energy, spirituality, and the interplay of opposing forces—such as attraction and repulsion—are central to his abstract compositions.
Throughout his career, Shinde has earned numerous prestigious accolades, including the National Award from the Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi (1984), the Biennale Award from Bharat Bhavan, Bhopal (1986), a Fellowship at Lalit Kala Akademi (1987), the Maharashtra Gaurav Puraskar (1990), and a Senior Fellowship Award from the Government of India (2000).
